ABF: What are your previous experiences and positions held that contributed to who you are as a banker today?
Until today, I’m only a banker because I work for a bank. This is my first experience working for a [not-so] traditional financial institution. I consider myself, consistently, a tech and e-commerce entrepreneur first and foremost. Banking is about time and returns with respect to risk.

The confluence of tech, e-commerce, and entrepreneurship is about delivering value, progressiveness, and engagement.

Previously I was director at Globe Telecom’s Digital Ventures department — telco’s foray into tech R&D and strategic plays into OTT platforms bringing digital front-end disruptions to traditional institutions.

Before that, I was marketing head of Groupon Philippines; at that time, at the forefront of e-commerce in the country.

I also worked as country head of start-up Zodio, a Monster Media offshoot from Singapore & Thailand.

Lastly, back in Silicon Valley and Brooklyn, I was an associate for a tech market research firm servicing tech companies such as Yahoo.

ABF: What are your key business philosophies?
It’s no secret that businesses, namely, speculative investment banking, petro and agri conglomerates, and giant pharma have wrecked global havoc. My generation does not want to be part of it. And yet, before a new paradigm can take over, we have to play along and vote with our wallets.

This is why my core business philosophy is the triple bottom line — People, Planet, and Profit; where full cost accounting and circular design is fundamental. Inclusiveness is a natural adjunct philosophy. Short term profits mean nothing if not sustainable in the long run.

Additional philosophies are: urgency, knowledge of the economy, extra care in hiring and accountability, barbell investing in both time and money, and transparency.
